This concrete labyrinth is adjacent to the Memorial Chapel at the University of Redlands and is based on the one inside the Chartes Cathedral in France, dating to 1226 A.D. It offers a place for contemplation and peace, combining the imagery of the circle and spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. Unlike a maze with many pathways and dead ends, a labyrinth has a single path which leads to the center and back out again. A reflection of life’s journey, the spiral symbolizes growth and evolution, in which one comes to the same point again and again, but on different levels so that everything can be seen in a new light.
